In the centre of the court is a wooden bucket atop a bronze pole. Eight grizzled players eye each other across the chequered floor as the screeching of a mechanical contraption signals the ejection of the turgid, irregularly-shaped sack is ejected from the bucket. It arcs ungainly through the air, bounces erratically o the lip of the bucket, and tumbles to the flagstones below. As it strikes the stone floor, a whistle blows, and the players explode into motion. This year’s Bucket season has begun!

What is Bucket?

Crudbucket is a #chess28 game of fantasy sportsball. Fantasy basketball on a chess board. It is a tabletop miniatures game, played on a chess board, in which teams of fantasy miniatures compete in a sport a bit like basketball, but with only one goal. It is based on my open Chess28 Core Rules System, but with a number of tweaks. This rulebook contains an early access version of the game. I wrote it because Ulrick Wery drew a lovely cover image for it (thus forcing it to exist).

The Rules of Bucket

The rules of Bucket are simple. The ball is ejected from the bucket in the middle of the court. Players must transport the ball into the opposing half, where they are permitted to shoot on goal. If they get the ball in the bucket, they score a number of points (from one to four) determined by how far away the shot was taken. The match goes to the first team to score seven points.
